Central Focus (Big Idea): Identity

Students will be introduced to the idea of developing a landscape painting using a variety of watercolor techniques and atmospheric perspective. Students will interpret historical and contemporary landscape artwork and styles that are used as a way to convey place and time that either act as a form of identity representation or a form of fantasy and escape. Students will choose landscapes, colors and techniques and use line, color, balance and texture in their final artworks.

Concepts of the Lesson:

The concept in this lesson allows students to convey mood and personality through non-character representation using place to explore self through symbolic representation. Students will reflect on their personal experiences to connect with their environment and style to create an expressive landscape.

Essential Questions:

What is identity?

• How do artists use color and other symbolic landscape elements to convey mood?

• How do Atmospheric Perspective and different techniques add to the feeling and illusion of depth in a painting?

• How does artwork tell a story and communicate to others?
