A High School Level Digital Art Lesson

Project Objective:

Student Example - See more below

Student Example - See more below

This project asks students to create a multi-layered image using an Adobe Photoshop paper cut-out effect.  This effect combines Vector Drawing with the Drop Shadow (Layer Style) and Gradient tools to simulate 3-D space, lighting and shadows. Optional “paper textures” can also be used if so inclined.

Techniques:

Adobe Photoshop techniques: Pen Tool, Paths Palette, Drop Shadow (Layer Style), Gradient Tool, Copy/Paste, Paste Into, Texture Filter (optional)

Media:

Adobe Photoshop

Concept or Theme:

For this project, I had students choose their own concept/theme in order to practice exerting more independence and autonomy over their artwork on a conceptual level. I also provided a given theme for those students who did not wish to come up with their own - asking students to peel away the layers of their subject to reveal “Something Unexpected”  This subject matter could be literal (ie: water surface and below) or figurative (ie: the brain pushed back to reveal memories), and include something nonsensical or have a deeper more social justice driven theme.
