Central Focus (Big Idea): Identity

Using canon of proportion and line drawing techniques previously learned, students create pop art self portraits using symbolic color theory combined with phrases based on pop art by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Lesson incorporates contour line drawing with some color technique as well as symbolic elements and color theory.

Concepts of the Lesson:

The concept in this lesson deals with discovery of identity as it relates to symbolic color schemes, and how pop art can be used to explore self through symbolic representation as it relates to popular culture. Students will reflect on their personal experiences to connect with their identity to two different color schemes, that also relate to the sayings or phrases added to the images.
