Students will create an original mask from found materials representing their “alter ego.” They will interpret the history of mask making and how they have transformed in visual culture through superheroes and villains. Students will then brainstorm symbols that represent their inner selves and explore different forms of identity through creation of relief sculptures, using form, texture, variety, shape and color.
Concepts of the Lesson:
The concept in this lesson deals with discovery of identity as it relates to character formation, and how masks can be used to explore different aspects of the unseen self through symbolic representation. Students will reflect on their personal experiences to connect with their identity to a character that represents a new and improved or an equal but opposite version of themselves.
Essential Questions:
• How does identity relate to the things we like or connect with?
• How does a mask both hide and reveal identity?
• How can found material be used to create masks?
• How can we use symbolism to represent our identity?
• How does artwork tell a story and communicate to others?
